Let me tell you about my most adventurous couple, N+B. When they first asked me to do their engagement session I was thrilled, and I immediately started coming up with all of these amazing ideas. I knew they liked to hike, they loved the water, and I knew that Guam was a special place for them. I was worried that they would think I was crazy because I wasn't coming up with traditional ideas for an engagement session. All of my ideas involved a little work, early mornings, and definitely a little sweat in this Guam humidity. Before our first meeting, I got nervous and bailed on most of the ideas I'd originally come up with. Instead I chose to pitch them the one that I thought was most authentic to them as a couple, and which would still capture their adventurous spirit while showing a bit of Guam. I thought their engagement session needed to be on their boat. Not only is being on the water fitting for these two Coast Guard lovers, but they really enjoyed their time together, fishing and diving. I also wanted to end their session with a bang and get these two in the water. I had ordered my camera’s underwater housing a few weeks before, I just needed it to get to Guam in time. When we finally had our pre-session consultation and I told them what I had in mind, they loved the idea. Beyond that, I knew we were a great fit for each other because their own ideas for the session were similar to the ones I had bailed on. We decided we would split up their engagement session to two locations. The first part of the session would be on their boat and the other part would be at a swimming hole near San Carlos Falls. San Carlos Falls was one of the first hikes they did on Guam. It was special to them and I wanted to do my best to capture that special spot for them.
As fate would have it, I received my underwater housing a few days before we went out on the boat. N+B went out and scoped the perfect location for our shoot. With everything coming together, one early morning, before the sun was up, we pushed away from the dock to capture some amazing images. The weather was perfect, the sun glow was amazing, and the water was calm. We couldn't have asked for anything better. After we finished taking photographs on the boat we couldn't resist and jumped into the crystal clear, blue water. It was pure magic and a perfect representation of what an incredible place Guam is.
The next weekend, we got up early again and took a nice morning hike to San Carlos swimming hole. Again, Guam did not disappoint. The sun rose as we started our hike and gave us a beautiful pink sky to enjoy. As we got closer to the water, the sky became overcast and gave us nice even lighting, while allowing us to stay cool and less sweaty. We had to make sure to bring their baby, Lily! Sorry, Poki (their cat partied to hard the night before and needed beauty sleep). She was the star of the show and her primping really paid off.
All and all, both sessions were incredible, and I was so lucky they chose me to capture this special time in their lives. It was amazing to be around their love. They are now leaving the island, as husband and wife, to go do amazing things (HARVARD Law School), and I wish them all the luck in the world!
